The Life Science Manufacturers Association (LSMA) supports action to reduce the risks posed by PFAS, while calling for a proportionate approach that reflects the specific uses of life sciences manufacturing. These uses involve small quantities in highly controlled environments and are essential to the production of medicines and diagnostics.
Our key messages:
- Recognise life sciences manufacturing as an essential use: exempt critical PFAS applications used in upstream medical and pharmaceutical manufacturing, where no suitable alternatives are currently available.
- Avoid duplicative requirements: use existing regulatory frameworks (e.g CLP) for reporting, communication and labelling rather than introducing standalone PFAS obligations that duplicate existing controls.
- Protect research and innovation: provide clear legal certainty for scientific R&D exemption, including the substances and equipment needed to conduct research.
